This page is dedicated to the photographs that Mike Sibthorp took while working at Bray Studios, he was often asked to help us out ( especially as he had a lot of posh equipment in those days! )

You can find Mike's location in his explaination at the bottom of this photo, he is planning to sell high quality prints from his collection if you twist his arm. This shot was only printed for a few crew members and signed by Ridley.

Classic photo that Ridley signed

Mike says:
" In 1978 I had a photography studio in the old manor at Bray Studios. Out on the lot was a large workshop full of guys building what looked like the biggest Airfix kit in world. One day in the bar Nick Allder asked me to take some photographs of a rig he was building and so I became "unofficial" stills photographer for the miniature special effects unit for Ridley Scotts "Alien". (Unofficial as I had no union "ticket"). The photographs of Nostromo, the landing gear and Narcissus in The Book of Alien are all mine. In 2009 Dennis Lowe and Jon Sorensen contacted me from out of the blue, "do you remember....?" and indeed  I did remember them and the rest of the crew and a very happy and interesting part of my life. I dug around in some old files and found that I still had some prints and transparencies, you can see these here and at

So far as I am aware, these photographs are unseen and unique. "

Nostromo on set
The shooting of Nostromo on the planet was done at night, often the case as Ridley spent the days at the main unit in Shepperton. Way after bedtime a great cheer went up from the riggers. Ridley looked up bemused "What was that about?". "They just went on to triple time boss".

For one of the in-flight scenes Brian asked me to photograph the factory on 5 x 4 Polaroid (makes a virtually grain free negative). He had a huge blow-up made from this and it was used as a backdrop, I think to Narcissus but it might have been Nostromo.
